Avenue of the Giants, Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Outstanding 31 mile scenic drive lined with giant redwoods. Dramatic alternative to Hwy 101.

Redwood National Park. Numerous trails to redwood groves. Birdwatching along the shore.

Coastal Trail (Hidden Beach Section), Redwood National Park. Spectacular ocean views. Popular whalewatching vantage points in winter and early spring.

Battery Point Lighthouse, Battery Point Island (at the foot of A Street), Crescent City. 1856 lighthouse and museum.
(707) 464-3922. Open April - Sept. (tides permitting). Lighthouse closed Mon. and Tues.; museum closed Sun. Tours for lighthouse given only at low tide.

Eureka. Foggy city faces Humboldt Bay; restored Old Town with
numerous Victorians.
 
Carson Mansion, Second and M Streets at the north end of Old Town, Eureka. The most outstanding Victorian home in California; no tours.
 
Clarke Memorial Museum, 3rd and E Sts, Eureka. Old bank building with Victorian collections.

Samoa Dunes Recreation Area, southern tip of the Samoa Peninsula, west of Eureka. Sandy beach area good for jogging and birdwatching.

Trinidad State Beach, just west of Hwy 101, 19 miles north of Eureka. Pleasant hiking area; good birdwatching.

Arcata. Funky university town with interesting main square at Arcata Plaza.
 
Azalea State Reserve, on Hwy 200, just north of Arcata. Abundant flowering shrubs peak in May.

Ferndale. Unspoiled village with walkable, colorful main street and Victorian residences.
 
Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, on Hwy 101, 7 miles south of Crescent City. Numerous hiking trails in foggy coastal rainforest.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Accessed via Avenue of the Giants. Easy self-guided nature trail leads to Founder's Grove with 300' trees.

Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, 1020 Ranch Rd, Loleta, west of Hwy 101, 10 miles south of Eureka. Excellent birdwatching with over 250 species of shore and water birds. Seasonal whalewatching along the coast from Eureka to Crescent City.

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, on Hwy 199, just east of Hwy 101. Many easy and moderate hiking trails among redwoods.

King Range National Conservation Area. Steep, remote oceanside trails in the "Lost Coast" region from Shelter Cove to Mattole River.

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, off Newton B. Drury Scenic Hwy, 6 miles north of Orick. Native Roosevelt elk often visible in meadows adjacent to Hwy 101. Hiking choices include Fern Canyon Loop and James Irvine Trail.

Sinkyone Wilderness State Park, 35 miles southwest of Redway. Rugged, remote coastal area.

Patrick's Point State Park, 5 miles north of Trinidad on Hwy 101. Beach, tidepools, trails. Rim Trail's ocean views may include whales in season.

Red Buttes Wilderness, southeast of Cave Junction, Oregon. 3,414 acres sub-alpine wilderness along the California-Oregon border.

Kalmiopsis Wilderness, near the southwest corner of Oregon. 180,000 acres named for the rare native rhodendron-like shrub.

Rogue River National Forest. Covers 629,088 acres north of the California-Oregon border. The larger of its two sections is just west of Hwy 5.

Agate Beach, Patrick's Point State Park. Lovely beach is below park's high cliffs, extending to the sand bar that forms Big Lagoon.

Shelter Cove. Boating and windsurfing in attractive harbor.

Dead Man's Beach, Shelter Cove, 23 miles southwest of Redway. Isolated scenic coastal area just south of the marina.

Enderts Beach, Redwood National Park. Trail leads to this secluded scenic beach.

Crescent City. Deep sea rockfish and salmon fishing. Great vantages of whales passing by during their seasonal migration.
