watching resident sea lions.
Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum, 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla. Part of
the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, this complex includes a kelp
forest and interactive exhibits.
Carlsbad. Known for its flowers and antique shops, this beachside town has fine old buildings.
Julian. Colorful mining boom town of the 1870s.
Anza Borrego Desert State Park. California's largest state park covers
an extensive area of Sonoran Desert and adjacent mountains. Featuring
palm oases, native American rock art, rare endemic plant species and
hiking trails. Popular hike from the Visitor Center to the oasis in
Palm Canyon, 3 miles.
Butterfield Stage Route, Anza Borrego Desert State Park. County road
S-2 parallels the mid-19th-Century route used by the Butterfield
stagecoach from Los Angeles to El Paso Signs identify wheel tracks.
Mission San Antonio de Pala. Small mission built as a branch of Mission San Luis Rey.
Oceanside Shoreline. Extraordinary beaches, boating, and deep sea fishing.
